Fred Whitby 1923-2019, was a grazier of Merino sheep and beef cattle, professional sheep shearer, founding member of Rocky Hall bushfire brigade and Rural Fire Service captain for many years, and my father-in-law.
Fred was a modest, gentle man and a walking encyclopaedia about the farming and settlement history of the region. As a shearer he travelled widely through the Monaro and far South Coast, staying on site at many farms, including the property of artist Hilda Rix Nicholas and her son.
Behind Fred is an award from the Rural Fire Service for lifetime service. Fred drove heavy fire trucks through smoke in steep and rough terrain, and directed firefighters. I am glad, though, that he was spared the bushfires of 2020. He truly had earned his rest.
Very significant are his large, strong working hands. The hat, the chair and the cat are also important. I chose to paint on wood panel rather than canvas; it seemed to suit a life spent outdoors. After lightly toning the prepared surface, I sketched the portrait freehand with a brush, based on a photo. I wanted a likeness of Cleo too, since she was so fond of him. Purple shades in the fireplace contrast with the warm flesh tones.
